Default Shifter Linkage Problem?????????

I have a 2001 LT 4x4 blazer.154k miles And lately it hasn't been wanting to go into Park. I have to mess with the shifter to get to go into park. First i would have to go to drive then I would have to shift to park and it would work, if I'm going reverse and try to shift it to park it shifts up but the dash stays in reverse and the truck can still be moved back and forth like if the shifter is stuck between the two or in neutral. It shifts fine into everything else just doesn't want to go to park. Any thoughts???????

Mine has done the same thing for over a year now. I did a little research a while back, and it looks like the shift cable can stretch.

What I've been doing, until I stop fixing other things and get to it, is to leave it in neutral, and engage the parking brake. The truck will crank in neutral, and the brake will hold it, if it's adjusted properly.

Doing it this way won't allow the steering wheel to lock, though.

EDIT: this might not work for most people, since I don't think you can remove the key unless you lock the ignition by turning the key all the way off. Mine is so wore out, I can slide the key right out whenever I want. Heck, I haven't even had the key in the ignition in forever!

Yup pretty common problem and there is a small bit of adjustment on the transmission but changing the cable out is pretty cheap and very easy to do. I have a how to from when I did mine here on the forum I'll be back with a link...

Thanks guys I appreciate the advice I figured out that there is a hose that connects with the end of the linkage is a tad bid short. I pulled it a bit and put a couple of hose clamps and so far it's working perfect. But of course this is just a temporary fix. It beats having to go under the car to engage it my self every single time I go to work. I will check out the link you sent me thanks.
