Default tranny compatability between engines

I have the 2.8L engine with the 700R4 (4x4) tranny. I plan on going to a junkyard this weekend for a replacement tranny. If I cant find any other 2.8 4x4, will the 700r4 from a 4.3L work just the same or no? What else can I look for?

No. The 2.8L v6 is a 60* V engine while the 4.3L v6 is a 90* engine. The bell housing of the 4.3L is noticeably wider than that of the 2.8L.

I believe a trans from a rear-drive 3.4L would match up to the 2.8L, wouldn't it?

The engine? sure. A 2wd 700R4 from behind a 3.4L, not without pulling all of the guts out of it first to swap the tail shaft.

A 700R4 from any 60* v6 will work, but a 4wd version will be the only thing that will bolt up without changes.
