tranny gone
my tranny just let go in my 88 s10 ,my local wrecker only has 98 2.5 std left in the yard will that tranny work behind my 88 with a 2.8 v6 ?

Possibly Not
That trans may not work because there is a 10 year difference. There is probably some updated stuff on the newer trans than what you have now. Check Craigs list you will probably find one there or better yet have yours rebuild and then you know what you have.

88 == 700R4
98 == 4L60E
You will not be able to use the transmission from the 98. It is electronically controlled while the 700R4 is mostly all manual.

I forgot to mention that my truck is a std tranny I'm looking at 98 std tranny for my 88 std truck just wondering if they are the same tranny both 5spd...

Well then, that changes things.
There were several different manual transmissions available through the years. The newer transmission should bolt up to the engine given that both engines have the 'GM Small Corporate' pattern, but the transmission lengths, shifter locations, etc may be different.
The '98 will likely have the NV1500.
My references are sketchy on what was offered in the 88 model year, but it likely has the BW T5 transmission.
