Default trans fluid

My transmission seems to consistently leak fluid needing to be replenished, but it isn't leaking it on the ground so I can only assume it's going into the transfer case. This possibility was confirmed by a mechanic, does anyone know what could be done to prevend this and what the negative effects this could have on either the transmission or transfer case? Thanks!
