Default transfer case fluid

I have a 1984 kfull size blazer with an np 208 transfer case. I recently pulled the transfer case to reseal the transmision to transfer adapter. i was told to replace the transfer case fluid with 10/30 motor oil. I noticed now it tends to grind when shifting the transfer case. Would to heavy anoil cause this? Did I get bad info?

I believe you need dextron atf fluid. Or at least thats whats in mine and many others. that 10 30 might be to thick to flow through the chain.
