Transmission does not work on reverse

I have a 2000 Chevy blazer 4 wheel drive and every gear except reverse works but it makes a really loud squalling / whining noise when in gear drive works fine but it’s just too loud to ignore

Sounds like it would be the reaction shell has broken or stripped the splines. You will only have first and third gears forward only. Absolutely sure that the transmission is shifting 3 times?
