Default transmission in limp mode?

My girlfriends 1995 chevy blazer 4x4 with automatic transmission is not shifting past second gear. I did some research and found out that it may be in limp mode. What can cause limp mode on this vehicle? Can I check why it is in limp mode by checking for an error code? If so, how do I check for an error code, because I went to have it checked some time ago at autozone because of a rough idle and he said he could not check it because the 1995 chevys have an OBD II port but an OBD I computer, or something like that, I didn't look into it any further because the problem corrected itself. Any help will be greatly apreciated.

A check of the stored codes may give you some insight into the problem if the problem is electrical. But the problem may be a bad 3-4 band.

Oh, I forgot to mention, the transmission was rebuild a little less than a year ago after having symptoms very similar to, if not exactly the same as these. I don't know exactly what the problem was when it had to be rebuild, but I guess if these are symptoms of a bad 3-4 band, thats probably what it was. Maybe the mechanic did a shotty rebuild and the 3-4 band went bad again. Too bad its a 3.5 hour drive from the guy that fixed it.
