OK, I have been reading this site for a good time now and have not found a solid answer to what I need. Site is excellent though. Nicely run!!!
Anyways, I have a '99 Blazer 2dr. Pretty loaded. The transmission is gone. My brother in law took it out about a year ago and lost interest in the project. I bought it off him last week.
I have been reading that not all 4L60E's are not created alike. Now, I found a '96 Blazer thats being parted out. Its a 4dr. Can anybody give me a solid answer on weather or not the '96 trans will be a direct bolt in or will I have to do some playing around with it. I have a 520+ HP blown mustang and get my fair share of playing with cars. I honestly dont want to if I dont have to. HAHAHAH
Thanks for everybodies help. Its really appreciated!!!
Forgot to add, the '96 still runs and drives. I would be pulling the trans out tomorrow if it will work. Also, whats an acceptable mileage for these? The '96 trans has over 150,000 on it. He is asking $300. Whatever I would need I can probably get off the donor vehicle. Its going to the scrap yard very soon. Has frame damage and wont pass PA inspection.
I re-build manual transmissions on the side a good bit but never played with an auto. This is all new to me.
Thanks again.

It will bolt up and work, however, it of high probability that the '96 transmission is not a two piece bell housing. I believe that they started the use of the two piece bell housings maybe very late in the 96 run with a mix through '97 and then full use by 98. That would be the only real exterior difference.
But there are also improvements made inside. I would try to find a 98+ transmission to use.

Thanks a million! I was hoping you would reply. I have read many of your postsand you seem to be the "go to" guy around here. I have not seen it yet so i can't be sure what it is. My luck it will be the 4 bolt t-case as well. Now with the 98 and newer, are they basically all the same? Is there an ending year that i should be aware of? What would be an acceptable limit for mileage where it wont go bad from usual useage? In other words, what kind if mileage would be too much? Would i be better off just re-building mine? Lastly, are they easy to do or do you need a pile of special tools? I have a well equiped toolbox but not much in the selection of auto trans stuff.

If you can swing the $$$ for a reputable shop to rebuild yours, it would end up being better than a used transmission hands down. The components that are available now are much stronger and more reliable than the stock components ever were (speaking of the weakest points). But it is going to cost you.

Just fell into another deal here. A buddy of mine has a brand new trans never ran. The catch is it's a two wheel trans. It was a 4 wheel trans converted over. How dificult is it to convert back to 4 wheel? Any special tools involved?

An update here. I got a trans from another '99. My buddy went through it. There was only65k on it. I throw it in friday night. Found a fuel leak i had to fix during the first attempt at starting. Fixed that monday. Went to fire it up. Cranked for a few and fired right up. Hammering like you wont believe!! Some project. Another buddy is bringing an 05 4.3 up tomorrow with 60k on it. Guess i will be putting an engine in the hole tomorrow night. Some fun. So far with the new engine paid for i am only at $1500 total cost. Thjnk its worth it?
