i had the same problem for my 2000 but it ended up being the sun shell. after replacing it no more probs tho. usually if its the sun shell the truck will have no reverse or 3 or 4th depending on what else broke.

When a reaction sun shell goes, it takes out reverse, 2nd, and 4th gears. The reaction sun shell is a hard part inside the transmission. Unless you want to get into the gritty details, I will leave it at that.
