Default will this scan tooo work?

My blazer(99) is out of time. I got the code nut I don't remember what it is. It's a crankshaft alignment code. I went down and talked to the mechanic and he's booked up for a littke while, my dad is pretty good friends with him, so he tild me I can borrow his old scan tool to see if it will work. He said he knows the new one will read the degrees and do all the stuff I need to get jt timed properly, but he always uses it. So if this doesn't work he'll get it done wjen he has time. The one he let me borrow is a snap on mt2500. Is it capable of doing the job?

As far as I know you cant adjust ignition timing on the 96+ models.

From what I understand I need the scan tool to tell me how many degrees my distributor is off(because I did remove it withojt marking It). So once I know I just take the distributor out, or loosen the screw then tighten till I get it +/-2 degrees from 0. I may be wrong, my knowledge is just from what I read here.. which I may have misunderstood. I know a few members in here are the timing experts it seems, hopefully they'll know if the tool will work.

the distributor has a drive gear on the bottom for the oil pump. It wont seat properly if it doesnt align. It only aligns in to ways, correct or 180degrees out (which wont run at all). The oil pump drive will only get out of whack if the crank turns with the dist. out. To reset it just find TDC and point the rotor in the direction of #1 on the cap, align the oil pump drive to where it should be with a flat head screw driver. You know the code can also indicate that the timing chain jumped a tooth. That scan tool is an old one, be sure it has an OBD2 attachment and has been updated to your year.

I figured it was the distributor because I had removed it without marking. I'll try out the scan tool. If it doesn't work I'll have him fix it. I don't want to mess witg the timing anymore. Everything else I do myself. Haha
