RE: 78 k5 transfercase
You have the NP203 transfer case from the description of the transfer case. I currently am running 33s under my 74 K5 with a 4-barrel 350, TH350 trans, NP203 (w/ part time kit & lockout hubs), and 3.73:1 gears. Not the best combination, but it is not too bad on the road. The 33" BFGoodrich M/T tires are not great on road, but did amazing in the deep snow out back.
I take it from your post that you currently do not have lockout hubs on the front... That would mean that you just have the factory direct coupling inside the front hubs. If you wanted to use locking hubs, you would need to do the part time conversion to the NP203 transfer case. The first link that pops up when I ran a google search for "NP203 part time kit" is to ColoradoK5.com > Mile Marker NP203 Part Time Kit

*EDIT* - If/When you change over to the part time kit and get locking hubs for the front, I have been looking for the caps and couplers from the front of a D44 axle like what you currently have. Let me know if you want to let them go.
