Default 88 K5: 2WD-4WD Shift Problem ????

Hi, if I try and shift from 2WD to 4WD when the engine is still cold it either just refuses to shift or I have to really yank the shifter. Even when it does shift it grinds into 4WD. It does the same between Neutral and 4L.If I'm in Park and try to shift from 4WD to 2WD I can sometimes hear something spinning as though it is not engaging . Once the Blazer warms up it seems to shift between the selections easier but it still does not feel like it should and still grinds ???
Any ideas??? Thankyou. (Before I bought the Blazer it was stood for 12 months under a tree so certain bits may just need lubricating and fluids changing, I just dont know where to start).

You should be able to shift between 2HI and 4HI while moving. I always find it easier to be rolling slightly for any shift. Whenever going through neutral in the transfer case, you will want the transmission to be in park or neutral prior to pulling the lever out of 4HI.

It would not hurt anything to change the transfer case oil. Driving the truck for awhile in 4wd will get everything lubricated as well.

When shifting from 2HI to 4LO it helps to have the truck slightly rolling... then put the tranny in neutral and bump the t-case lever to neutral and then to 4LO. An occasional grinding when going into 4LO is normal.
If you have the t-case in neutral and place the tranny in forward or reverse, you will not be able to get the t-case into LO or HI range or the tranny into park without a lot of grinding.
