Default When and how to shift from 2wd to 4wd ??

This may be a really dumb question, but I didn't get a 'book' with this thing.
When PUSHING the button(s) on the dash to shift from 2wd to 4wd or back again, what is the proper drill?
I'm asking cuz I just spent a grand to get my front diff. repaired when someone was messin' with this system (while the truck was out of my hands).... Since I live in the 'city' I've never had need to use 4wd, btw...so I've never bothered with it until the aweful noises started!!......
Oh, it's a '98 4.3/auto/2dr/4wd.
Thanks for your help !

books are on line for download, google it. 2wd to 4wd and back just push the button on the fly. 4wd low in or out reguires to be stopped, in neutral or Park.

not using the 4wd button is like never using your muscles, they need to be used or they die.

4 high can be engaged on the fly up to 50mph and back again to 2wd. 4low can only be engaged in neutral and the vehicle going no faster then 5 mph. Hope this helps.
