Question 1) Do you have the owner's manual? It should tell you how to operate the A/C.
I think you have the same setup in an 87 as all the trucks did in the early to mid 80s (could be wrong) If you have two slide switches and a **** then the **** is for you fan (blower) speed. The top slide switch will control your vacuum actuators and whether you turn on the compressor or not. If you put it in the MAX position it will recirc the air with the compressor engaged. You should have OFF, MAX, NORM, BI-LEVEL, VENT, HTR and DEFROST. Off is self explanatory, MAX is as above, Norm is A/C with air being drawn from outside, Bi-Level is kinda weird because you can actually run the heater out the bottom vents and A/C out the top ones depending on your bottom slide switch position (for sunny days when it's still chilly outside and the sunny portion of the cab is too warm but you feet are cold), Vent lets outside air into the vehicle and you can adjust the temp with the bottom slide (the one I prefer), Htr just opens the bottom floor vents and temp control is again run by the bottom slide switch and Defrost runs the defroster with a little going to the floor vents (if I remember correctly and engages the compressor and temp control is always rin by the bottom slide. Left is colder, right is warmer. This is from memory because it's been a few years since I had a full size truck. If I'm mistaken, sorry. I think they kept this on the K-5 up through 1988 or 89.
