Engine dies while driving 1989 k-5
I have a 1989 full size 5.7l k-5. The engine dies (check engine light pops on then truck dies)while Im driving down the street (mostly between 2nd and 3rd gear). I have changed plugs, wires, cap+rotor, fule filter and still same outcome. Im going to change the fuel pump next and pray that dose the trick. I will keep you guys informed on my progress. Any Ideas are appreciated....
Thanks,
William

You say that the check engine light pops on. What code has been stored? To read the code, follow the directions on THIS SITE.
And before you go throwing a fuel pump at it, you should do a fuel pressure test to determine if the pump is even the problem. A TBI motor requires 8-10psi.

Hopefully the codes will point you in the right direction. Let us know what they are and we will move forward from there.

IIRC, for OBD1 that is not a DTC, but just a 'system is ready to read' code.

Yes, that is what it means. There should be further codes stored if the light is staying on while you drive...

The "check engine" light does not stay on while I'm driving (only right before it shuts down). The code just keeps flashing in the "ready to read" code 12 over and over with no changes in flash pattern. I have slightly above average auto knowledge and little time these days so I have committed my first sin and turned it in to a local shop. I will post the results here when I get results back.
Thanks for all the help guys !!
