Notes on 78 Windshield Wiper/Wash rebuild
The wash pump quit years ago, the kit was useless. The kits dont include the most important part- the PUMP O RING.
The O ring split and wouldnt pump. The correct ring is 1.000" OD x 0.140. DO NOT try to pry the pump body off, the gear etc MUST be removed
and the motor case MUST be split to get the piston far enough out to replace the O ring.
The pump body isnt removed to replace the O ring, just push the piston out so the groove is exposed and pull the O ring out.
1. The relay assembly for the pump un-clips- black plastic clip on right side facing the connector. Be careful to not damage the leaf switch.
2. The motor case halves fasten with about 10 screws and nuts. The case half with the washer parts comes off and leaves the motor and brush holder behind.
3. With that case half off, remove all the parts surrounding the pump lever, and push the flat plate to push the piston forward and dig the old O ring out.
4. The motor and brush holder come off as ONE UNIT after bending the retaining ears away. DONT try to remove the rotor by itself, might break the brush or holder.
5. There is a thermal overload circuit breaker buried under the brush holder by the case half. That breaker heats up and opens to stop the motor if the wiper blades
get stuck (like ice on the windshield). The arm can be pried away and a piece of 300 grit sandpaper used to polish the breaker contacts, but that results in the soft
bi-metallic arm bending out and so the contacts will be open and motor wont run. I pushed down on the arm to bend it back in position.
6. DONT lubricate the gear etc with petroleum grease, use mineral grease only. Some nylons dont like petro grease. Saw lots of yellowed, cracked gears in VCRs due to the wrong grease being used.
7. Recondition the commutator segments by GENTLY clamping the screw on the shaft in a drill press at LOW speed and fold over a piece of 300 - 600 grit sandpaper and wrap it around the commutator as its turning.
That will sand it evenly. Then use a razor blade to carve any debris out from between the commutator segments so the commutator doesnt short.
8. The motor rotor magnets (2) are spaced apart and held in the housing by two stamped steel springs that ABSOLUTELY must be put back in correctly or the rotor will rub against the magnets.
Be sure the rotor turns freely before reinstalling the unit.
