That is what the schematic says that it is supposed to be hooked to...

Looking at the schematic, it appears that all of the wires should be energized when the ignition switch is on...

hmm.. i dont understand why it wouldnt get power.. what happens if you hook them backwards?

The the one that is hot comes off the battery . The other is off the ignition switch to turn on the alterneter. You can run a wire off the battery to check it for charging . I think if you run a wire off your fuse block thats says ignition you will be okay

The hot wire mesures your battery voltage and the other truns on the alternater

well why would it smoke if i ran a jumper from the batt stud.. i tried that just to test it out

i think you have something wrong with your alternater and thats why there is no juice at the ignition wire . If you can afford it go buy one of those one wire alterneters and not mess around with that little plug .

im haven the same issue with my 89 jimmy new alt new bat new ground and alt to bat wire all beefer then stock and i have a drain only when running stumped as well
