Default 454 timing mark

should be about 8 degrees btdc.

I agree. 8* btdc #1. I typically tweak by ear though.

hook up a vacuum gauge....adjust timing for the highest vacuum reading ....then back off if pinging or detonation occur . works like a champ for my 502.

I used a vac gauge on my 350 when I dropped the new HEI distributor in and it did a pretty good job of getting it close. I had to retard it a bit after the fact.

by ear is easy ......you just listen to the rpms .....as you increase the advance rpms will increase until you get to far then it will run rough ......at that point back it off until you get a decent idle speed. this also goes in hand with adjusting your carb. as it will also change the rpms and vacuum ...which will affect timing .

Default timing by ear

thanks for the info! speaking of, i put in a different distributer, and it didn't line up like the other dist.(because the dist. was different) don't think i put wires in the right spot. so this made my timing marks off(i think) is this possible? now when i time it to 6* btdc, it doesn't run right, very low(rough) idle, so when i time it by ear, the time mark on the dampner is way off the scale! but it sounds and runs good! so to fix this problem? i would bring #1 piston to TDC, then re align my dist.? or maybe my spark plug wires? this poses a problem because the wires coming from the dist. don't reach far enough to advance timing any further!
