Default Transfer case problem

Hello all. I am a "new to me" owner of a 1993 Chevy full size blazer. It has a 5.7 with OD auto tranny. I have a strange problem...or maybe I am just doing it wrong:

Whne shifting from 2WH to 4WH it goes in normal (when tranny is in neutral)....but go up to the middle area (transfer case middle area) and then try to put it back into any 4WH, 4WL it grinds. I have to turn it off and then put it back into the area that I want it in and then start the engine. Any ideas what may be happening or what I might be doing wrong?

My guess would be that your neutral shifter position isn't fully in neutral in the transmission.
