Default 1998 s-10 2.2l automatic wont click, turn over, or start

On last evening my son's 1998 s-10 which has 1000 miles on a new engine and has had no problems what so ever since the rebuild. He was out and started it over and over for the last month and on yesterday alone... 10-12 times. Then with no warning or anything would not crank at 12:30 am. All idiot lights come on.... new battery and cables, can't be jumped off(tried), tapped starter, checked battery cables connections, etc. To no avail we get nothing... no sound , no clicking , no turn over... nodda thing. It was parked for two hours and now it wont start. I would love to know if others have had this happen and which direction to go in. I have never had a starter just die like this without some signal first..... open to suggestions from the experienced owners and mechanics out here...... College starts Monday morning for him....

Check all connections at starter. Check fuseable link. If that fails bench test starter

awesome will do... what I was thinking. Only thing I can add is that when I try the ignition switch the headlights do dim down if that means anything
