Oil gauge bouncing from 0 to 40. Oil changed 10 days ago. Put 2 quarts in today. Stick shows safe level. ???? Help!

Why did you have to put two quarts in it today if the oil was just changed ten days ago? Was it already low? Is it leaking?

The oil pressure problem sounds like it could be a bad sending unit (behind the distributor), but you may have other problems if you're using a ton of oil.

Tom,

Brought it to Firestone for the oil change 10 days ago when the gauge began bouncing from 0 to over 40. After that it was fine for 5 days or so...brought it back there yesterday and they told me there's a leak and added 1 at. I added another at as well. The gauge stayed at below 20 all day yesterday.Today it's fine . Drove highway miles and the gauge is at a little less than 40. Engine sounds fine. Think it's a sending unit?

Sounds like the sending unit to me. That's also a common place for it to leak, but you would notice if it were leaking THAT much.

Ok, will get the sending unit checked out....thank you!
Hopefully, that's not too much to repair!

It's not too expensive. Hopefully that's all you need.

I agree... You would think you would see oil somewhere, on the ground while parked, somewhere on the motor or the hood... Very strange indeed...
