The blazers that i have seen around my area dont all seem to have this function. This is the first vehicle ive owned that has an auto 4wd option. Ive owned 4wd vehicles but never one with this. I was wondering exactly what it does and when is it safe to use it and when is it not supposed to be used?

Straight out of the Owner's Manual for a 2000:
Basically, drive in 2HI until you feel that road conditions warrant having the extra traction afforded by AUTO 4WD. There will be a slight delay between when the truck senses slip and power being delivered to the front axle. This delay won't be present when in 4HI.
AUTO 4WD:
This setting is ideal for use when road conditions are variable. When driving your vehicle in AUTO 4WD, the front axle is engaged, but hte vehicle's power is sent only to the rear wheels. When the vehicle senses a loss of traction, the system will automatically engage four-wheel drive. Driving in this mode results in slightly lower fuel economy than 2HI.
4HI: Use 4HI when you need extra traction, such as on snowy or icy roads or in most off-road situations. This setting also engages your front axle to help drive your vehicle.

Thank you now i know how it works. It would probly be good for the light snowfalls we get overnight randomly in the winter.

yeah pretty much that is all I have every used it for in my dads suburban. I like it on the highway when the roads are on the verge of freezing or it is snowing. otherwise it just stays in 2wd or 4hi, sometimes in 4 lo for off roading or on slippery boat ramps pulling the boat out (+3500lbs boat and trailer).

Yea i like using 4lo for off roading. It seems like its easier on the truck when you climb steep hills. By the way how good does the blazer tow that boat. How much do you think a blazer can tow without messing up the tranny?

I don't actually pull the boat too often with the blazer, just from the cabin to the boat launch a couple times, otherwise my Dad uses his sububrban. It pulls pretty good, would be nice for longer drives if it had a manual tow/haul mode instead of it being automatic. The trailer is a bit wider than the blazer since it is a tandem axle trailer and its a 21 foot boat. I think overall the whole package is like 4,000 pounds or so.
Yeah if you are climbing hills or extreme stuff offroad I definately use 4lo, depends on the terrian, but 4 hi is good for just general off roading and going through mud.
For how much you can tow, if it is just occasionally I would say you could go up to 5000-5500lbs depending on your hitch and overall vehicle weight capablity. If you are going to tow it a lot I would suggest something in the 3000-4500 lbs range. Also you could add on a transmission cooler, which would increase the transmission life. Just some thoughts.
