Building my own version of the "Winter Import Bumper"
I saw old skool luvr's Winter Import Bumper, and I love it! It's a brilliant idea imo. However, this is Redneckville, USA, so I have to worry about bigger problems- namely, Jim-Bob and Bubba in their SUV that is about three feet off the ground. I got rear ended a while ago by a truck, and the truck was so high that my bumper didn't take any of the impact- no, the spare tire took it. The whole tailgate bent in half and the back window broke out. Of course, since the person who hit me was my dad (on purpose, btw), and he immediately cancelled my insurance, I can't get it fixed.
I don't want this to happen again, so I'm wanting to build a big shield-like thing- I was thinking 2 and a half feet tall by 3 and a half feet wide, that goes into my hitch. I was gonna use square steel tubing to build it, then finish it off by covering it with steel mesh. How can I support the top of it? Obviously, the top is gonna be a good distance from the hitch itself, and if a truck hits it, it could simply bend and smash against the tire. How do I support the thing? I was thinking about making it stick out a bit, then I could take a bit of tubing and run it at an angle from the part that goes into the hitch up to the top of the shield. Suggestions?

"Redneckville, USA"
"the person who hit me was my dad (on purpose, btw)"
Dude, being that I am Canadian, that paragraph made me laugh so hard and think of all the red neck stereotypes Ive known and heard of. You should build a crude outside rollcage with rusty iron spikes allover it. And use a bunch of hoxkey pucks to lift her up another 10 inches... Or maybe tow around a trailer full of old dynamite all the time, Im sure rednecks have some old sheds that you can find jellied TNT in...
Seriously though, something like a cross between these two would work, but make sure you mount the anlers on top to take the initial impact. I think you also might want to contack Jerry Springer about those daddy issues too. LOL

funny, i never saw this when it first came around.
sorry to burst your bubble brother, but my WIB was never meant to protect any of my trucks from some ***-hat in a lifted FS, it was meant to stop the idiots (ie Import & Caravan drivers) in New Bramladesh (aka Brampton, ON) from sliding into (and under) the back of my 1st 'Burb when i worked out there.
ther is no practical way to protect your truck with something like what you have in mind.
the only thing you can do, is drive one of these around,

good lord
the stryker? really?
if you are going to swap your WIB idea for a militayr ride, get a M1117
can roll at 75-80 mph, instead of a robot turret run by a camera and joystick, you are enclosed in it running it with a joystick, and instead of 1 .50 cal, you get a side-by-side mounted MK 19/.50 cal FTW!
Bonus: auto inflate/runflats and 20 ton winch standard!
with the stryker all you ever see is people running away from them (i assume because they suck)
the blind spots can hide a truck
and much like the tanks developed for WW I, it was learned that in order to shrug off hits, you would need sloped/angled armor. but we for got that in a hundred or so years, so instead, we've welded shopping carts to them for protection...
there's an Idea! after you give up Neko for the Jimmy with wreck interior, you can put shopping acart armor around it! screw catching imports in winter, you can catch RPGs!

actually that apc is a canadian lav III not a stryker, look at the rear door design, and the turrent on top. And contrary to your belief that the stryker is a poor apc, it was designed to be a troop transport, not a tank. And they have been known to stop RPG's quite well, they can also take ied's good to.
Now if your gonna drive around in something big, but short of a tank, I give you the M3 Bradely fighting vehicle:

Sounds like you need the A-Team.
Seriously though, anything like that will look pretty ghastly and depending where it's mounted will most likely end up causing more damage in the end. If you build is sturdy enough on the hitch, it may bend your frame up when you get hit... Moving away from your father and having good insurance seem like a pretty good solution to me.
While I'm at it:
Since this thread is not an actual build, but suggestions...

Good luck with this.

I finished it! But I don't have a camera to take a picture. The thing that sucks is that I don't have the Blazer anymore.
I got a minivan... I had to borrow my friend's phone to take this picture.

It won't fit.
Neko had a two inch reciever...
Ed has the smaller reciever. I think 1 1/4" but I'm not sure.
