General question on fuel pump failure
Hi all,
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know why the 2nd Gen Blazers (and probably the S-10's also) have so many issues with the fuel pumps? I've had to replace mine several times now in my 1998 Blazer over the past 10 years or so. I'm the 3rd owner of the vehicle. It seems like these fuel pump issues are inherent to them for some reason.
My Blazer now is currently inop as I believe it's another pump gone bad.
Thanks,
Larry

The service life of AC Delco or Delphi pumps appears to be around 100k+ miles. Some believe that running the tank dry shortens this interval but I am not sure I believe that. Gas going bad may also shorten life, I have experienced that in other vehicles. Cheap aftermarket fuel pumps can fail in as short as a few days.

Interesting...
Could you elaborate on why you think running the tank dry doesn't shorten pump life? I said in my post, that my Blazer is currently inop.
I posted in the 2nd Gen forum that when I had a gauge attached it initially read about 55 and didn't hold. I timed it for about 10 minutes and it dropped to about 40. I know it's leaking, but not sure where. I know pressure eventually drops, but not sure of what the rate is or supposed to be.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Larry

My blazer has had two fuel pumps and both have gotten over 100,000 miles. The first was factory and the second was Delphi. That truck ran out of gas many times over its lifetime and that did not prevent a good service life of the fuel pump. You should not run a tank dry for multiple reasons and I cannot guarantee no damage or stress when you do but it has not seemed to effect my fuel pumps significantly. It even sat for 5 years unused at one point and the gas turned to varnish. I pumped the tank and put fresh gas in, it ran like crap for about half a tank until the injectors cleaned up and then good to go.
Regarding your fuel pressure, follow the steps in the fuel pressure test sticky. First you need to determine if the leak is before or after the fuel filter then go from there:
