Default oil leaking

yesterday ran some errands and when i stopped i noticed a smell like rubber burning and some smoke coming from underneath. It stopped so i didnt pay much attention to it. This morning i noticed there was oil on the drive way so i looked under and seen oil dripping from the rear of the engine. Without jacking it up and looking does anyone know what could be the cause or what to look for. '98 Blazer....114700 miles on it.
Thanks
Tom

A sudden oil leak could be a failed o-ring for the remote oil filter lines to block adapter. This is at the rear of the block on left (driver's) side.

It is not too hard to see but a bit harder to fix. It is pretty cramped up in there when it comes to getting the part out but it is definitely a backyard mechanic fix.

If it is the o-ring and you need to replace it, a trick I learned is that for the gasket that is also in there, use a bit of vaseline to hold it in place when you reinstall it.

To get the oil hoses off from the adapter, I used a really long extension on my socket wrench to get at it from the front.

Again, if it is what I suggested, you might consider replacing the oil lines too as they tend to start leaking eventually. There are lots of threads on replacing these.

i really appreciate your comments. After talking to some folks they say to eliminate the cooler and lines. So i am asking you, do you have any ideas on doing this.

Thanks

I don't know about how to eliminate the oil-cooler lines nor if it is very practical. The remote oil cooling is normally part of the oil cooling system and as such is not a bad thing to have, especially if you use your Blazer for any towing. You might start a new thread asking about deleting the remote oil filter is practical, useful and how to do it.

I wish I could be of more help on that.

You are very welcome. I had this part leak on my 92 Blazer, that is what made me think this could be your situation. Be sure to report back what you learn and good luck!
