Default Quotes on Mechanics work

Hey Guys,
My friend has a 98 4 door blazer that his father let sit in the driveway for a few years. Recently he took it to the mechanics to get a quote to have it all back up and running. Things like brakes, exhaust, and ball joints. One number that really stood out was $750 for the ball joints alone. That seemed really high to me, so i figured i get all of your opinions. Ball joints online are ~50 a piece give or take so 750 seems really high. Let me know what you think...

I learned this the hard way. $750 is probably pretty typical for your area. Is it fair/accurate? Not really. They are probably the original ball joints and as such they are riveted in. Many members have taken it upon themselves to have at them with an air chisel or the good ol' BFH and cold chisel. Also, buy either Moog or Power Performance greasable ball joints to replace the originals.

Cliffnotes: $750 is high but it's a crappy repair and you're in NJ where prices are still high (mostly the labor involved). You can do it yourself but be prepared to swear all day without air tools.

Also, here's a link with a very similar question. Looks like $750 comes up as a quote for another member in Michigan:

Yea. Balljoints on these are a royal pain. But 750 still seems steep. Im not sure though what it can go for up there. Around here is about 55.00/hr plus parts.
