Default Shift Cable broke story - replacement project

Hey all,

Long story short a few weeks ago I went on vacay with the gf a few hours away. My blazer got me there just fine with no issues. The following day I wasnt so lucky. When going into town we stopped and I put it in park, a few moments later tried cranking her over and she wouldnt start...Oh crap I thought, until i looked down and saw the light wasnt on P for park, its in Reverse. Even more of an Oh Crap moment at that point.

I thought I had a big tranny issue and nearly had a heart attack. After taking a few breaths I put it in N and she started right up. I brought it back to my camp site and looked it over. In my review and a few phone calls to a mechanic buddy it was determined that it was probably the cable and not the tranny itself. HUGH sigh of relief

Thankfully I know a little bit about the tranny system since replacing my sisters on her blazer i recalled that im able to shift into Park from the tranny. So for 3 days I did just that, manually shifted into Park. For added security I blocked the wheels.

Fast forward to getting it home and on the lift I see that the cable is completely shot. By some saving grace it didnt completely break while on Vacay.

So after calling around and seeing its dealer only part for 100 bucks i did a bit of research and found AC Delco has one off of Amazon for 43. It came in yesterday and it matched right up. I havent swapped them out yet but when I do ill do a nice right up with pics as I didnt see any like that on here.

BTW, here is the link to the part if anyone needs one.

I just had the same thing happen to me! I thought it may have been a neutral saftey switch or something but its just the silly shift cable. I'll be replacing mine sometime next week(maybe). I don't really mind manually shifting it right now since its so hot out and I don't wanna do any real physical labor lol!!

Its been hot the last few weeks here and even with the garage doors and fans on its way to hot to do the work.

Thankfully I have my Firebird running somewhat well enough that iv been able to use that. T Tops have been off and hitting 70+ on the thruway is a nice poor mans AC.

I just hope for a small break in weather as I have another vacation planned in 3 weeks and the blazer is needed for that.
