What type of gas?
Ok, let's take a dead horse and beat the (ugly 4 letter word) out of it.

There are a million more sites out there as well, some that go more in depth than that one to explain what's going on. In a nutshell, if you run the cheap stuff and have a knock (premature detonation in a cylinder) you should consider boosting your octane, but if you don't then you're getting a clean burn and there's no reason to give the oil companies more than we already are.

Yes I have to agree with you 100% on that. Prices of oil going up every week. 1 gas station near my house has gone up about 25 cents since the end of last month. I was like 3.35 a gallon for 87.
I'm looking into that more now that you've mentioned it, and there are a few good articles out there about it. From what I can find, detergents in gasoline are a requirement of the EPA, however levels of detergents in gasoline are dependent upon what a company wants to put into it. From what I can find with the little bit of time i've spent on this so far, the detergent levels vary more company to company than they do between octane levels, so your best best is to research which companies are selling the best quality, cleanest gasoline and use those instead of possibly getting less cleaning ability out of a higher priced gasoline somewhere else.
