Why the oil checking hate? 0.o

I know this sounds strange but I was at the gas station today and while the gas attendant pump my gas (you can't pump your own gas in Oregon for some dumb reason) I checked the oil and fluids like I normally do when I get gas and the attendant had asked me why I did that, I told the guy that "My father raised no none oil checking daughter, thats why!" in other words he raised me right lol.
The attendant started chuckling (he started looking over his shoulder for some reason as well so I stood closer the driver's side door just in case) and started asking me if he should use premium or regular for his car and I proceeded to give him speech about the pro's and cons of using the different grades cause [email protected]#% his time and patience for wasting mine, am I right folks?
So what I'm asking is, what is this guys motivations for giving a hard time for checking my oil. Ive had the attendants give me a hard time already cause I check my own oil. The statements usually include "pointers on how to check my oil" or giving me lector when its the Ideal time to check said (yea because I have **** that means I have no clue on the inner workings of a internal combustion motor even though I help rebuild a Pratt & Whitney Radial aircraft engines in my free time), anyways is this their lame attempt at small talk or is this just ignorance on their part? Also was wondering if anyone has issues like this as well. You would think checking the oil and fluids would be expected.

I don't trust people to touch my vehicles. I wouldn't even let someone pump gas for me! I wouldn't worry about what other people have to say, let alone some gas jockey (gas jockeys don't get offended).

if they question it, they have no idea what they are talking about and should not be pumping your gas.
That is insane that a law that was set 60+ years ago is still in place there, and New Jersey. Absolutely insane.
Remind me not to travel there

I'll vote ignorance on his part. There are still many guys who think women have no place under the hood of a vehicle. I know many guys who should never look under the hood, let alone be caught with any type of tool.

Maybe some of the hard time you get is because you're making them look bad. We used to have full service pumps and the "fuel transfer agent" would offer to check the fluids and tires and clean the windshield.
