Scariest experience off-roading that i went through was in a 82 k-5 blazer doing some trail riding and rock crawling. We were on a trail that had a pretty good cliff off to one side. We were coming up and over a large rock when the rear tire slipped and we put it on its side. Of course the side it leaned over on was the one right next to the cliff. I thought for sure we were going over but the roof snagged a couple rocks and we stayed in place. Once we got it back on all fours we just took all the bypasses and got it home. Neither me nor my buddy wanted to do that again.

He always brings 2 tow straps, lots of chain, and he has a winch with a pretty long cable. One way or another we would have gotten back up if we needed to. Not sure how the k-5 would have been but hey Ive seen those things drive nearly destroyed.

Bob and I do some scary off-roading a couple times a week. My best friend Casey lives about 5 miles from me on the side of the mountain. To drive to her house takes quite a bit of scary off-roading, her driveway curves right along with a very steep cliff and you can see straight down, and it's quite bumpy, huge rocks all along the way, and mudholes, too. Pretty scary stuff.

The scariest thing I have ever had happen to me while offroading was, when I was going up a really steep hill in the snow and even though I was in 4wd and never took my foot off the gas I started sliding back down the hill. Scared the crap out of me. Couldn't steer that great either, but after about 50 ft of sliding I was able to stop and slowly back down the hill.

In my younger days, I went offroading in a Chevy Impala (land boat). We ended up on a firebreak road and I floored it all the way through the woods, fearing that if I stopped she'd sink and we'd never get her out of there. Hit many rocks along the way and discovered a softball sized dent in the gas tank when I got her all cleaned up. She never leaked though, lucky me. Another time, same car, got her stuck on a dirt road in the woods, at night. We ended up walking out as she was dead stuck and it was pitch black. That night a blizzard came through and the old girl got buried. When the storm finally let up (days later), a couple friends (1 in a Land Rover, 1 in a Jeep Wrangler) and I eventually made it back to the buried Impala and dug her out. Rear passenger tire was flat and the frame was in the mud. Took us hours to jack her up and change the tire (freezing cold), and we ended up slamming the LandRover and the Jeep together as they both tried pulling her out onto firmer ground. We eventually got her out of there. Every square inch of that car was covered in mud by the time we were through. I had to drive with my head out the side window just to see where I was at. It was funny as all get out. Ah, fun times to remember.

my grandpa was off roading in his jeep on the trails that i usually take back in the late 70's and he stumbled upon some hells angles camping and one of the guys put a gun to his head and said "keep the wheels moving". that is the scariest off roading story i have ever heard
