Empty Radiator

Empty Radiator
After replacing the thermostat in my '86 Blazer I went on a 5 hour road trip... half way there I noticed I was overheating.
The Radiator was completely dry, and the overflow was completly full! I've never heard of this happening before, what could cause this?
I emptied the overflow, and refilled the radiator with fresh coolant, and so far on short drives it stays even.

It's possible that when you originally filled your rad that you had an air pocket causing the coolant in the engine to boil into the overflow tank and leave your rad empty.
When you replaced your thermostat and refilled your rad, did you run the engine to operating temperature (so the thermostat would open) and then recheck the fluid level after the thermostat opened?
