Fault Codes 1402
Does anyone know what fault code 1402 is for? My "service engine light soon" light went on and the car started to run rough and almost conked out felt like the plugs were fouling as the exhaust was really smelly.
I pulled into my local Autozone - not my first choice and they put their scanner on it - the fault code was 1402 - they could not tell me what it meant - BUT, they reset the computer and the car is running just fine.

RE: Fault Codes 1402
I could not find any reference to a P1402 code in any of my references (nor through the link listed above).
I did find:
P0402 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Flow Excessive Detected
If the EGR valve were stuck open, it could cause the vehicle to react as described.
We really need to know more about your vehicle to diagnose further. From a different post I have found that you have a '95 4.3L. I am not as familiar with the CPI motors as I am with the CSFI motors (96+) so I don't know how much help I can be.
If the code is indeed P0402, I would start by removing the EGR valve and giving it a thorough cleaning.
Good luck.

RE: Fault Codes 1402
Here is what my books say, hope this helps.
P1402 EGR metering orifice restricted.
Since you have not had the problem again, it might have just been a piece of dirt, foreign object etc. that eventually cleared itself. Or the problem may still be there and the computer is just compensating. A full factory/dealer diag. would be best but cost around $50.00.
Personally if I did not see the code again and did not notice any performance issues I would not worry about it.

I found that description too, but it was for a BMW/Infiniti... Must be an OBD1 (1.5) thing... hmm.
I do agree though. Don't do anything until the code comes back.

RE: Fault Codes 1402
The P1402 code I had in my book came from general OBDII codes, nothing make/ model specific, from what I have seen only the OBD general codes w/letter prefix (the letter being optional LOL) have the 4 digits (I could be wrong though). I have only seen 2 and 3 digit codes that are manufacturer specific.
I am thinking probably a piece of carbon came loose and burnt off which would explain the smell and the performance problems. I have had this problem before but the vehicle did not have OBD.

RE: Fault Codes 1402
My listing for GM specific OBD2 P-codes does not show a P1402. Generic OBD2 P-codes are typically P0 (Pzero) codes.
The reason why I think it may be an OBD1.5 thing is because of the year. In '95, they had this weird mix of OBD1 & OBD2 termed OBD1.5. It had an OBD1 DLC, but with some OBD2 programming, but not all of it. Could be something weird like that...

RE: Fault Codes 1402
You have me scratching my head now. My book just showed the generic p codes with 4 digits in the 1000 range the U code started with 0. I wonder ifany of the books are right LOL.
