Default Fuel milage

I just bought an 88 Blazer 2 door 4X4 auto 2.8l I have found it is very hard on fuel, is this normal? when you leave it ideling for ten minutes or so it seems like there is a raw fuel smell in the air, like it's running a little rich, i'm not sure if this meens anything or not.

I was also wondering if the 2.8l is as bad as i've been told, so far it's been pretty good other than milage.

Any feed back would be apreciated.

I don't think the 2.8L is a bad engine, it's just underpowered so you need to step on the gas more than a 4.3L, which means, poor gas mileage.
You might have a "lazy" o2 sensor causing the engine to run rich. By "lazy" I mean it hasn't failed, it's just old and slow.
