Default Fuel sender...

my 2000 has a bad fuel sender...im assuming because its doing the same thing that my wrangler did and thats what my mechanic told me it was.. when my gas gauge gets low (idk about less that 1/2 more than 1/4) it starts fluctuating and says sometimes its full. more or less its all over the place when it gets low so i just go fill up....how much does one of these cost and is it easy enough to do at home? my buddies dad is very good with all sorts of vehicles and im sure we could do it if we could get instruction on how. thanks

The sender shouldnt be TOO expensive, had this problem with my father's 2002 Ranger and it did the same thing. The gauge kept reading FULL. His was located inside the tank though, I dont know about the Blazers yet but if its the same its a bitch.

May well be right. Its in the tank, too bad huh. You better be sure that is the trouble before taking tank out. Check all the wiring going there. Do you have access to an extra one for the dash? I always remove those things from donor cars and stock my misc parts shelf with them. Fun to try to exchange one to see where the trouble really is. Working on dash may not even be easier than taking tank off.

Had one here we didnt understand, just kept it full. Then pump finally died. Fairly large chunk of tree branch. Must have enterred tank last time it was off before that. That chunk just kept bouncing around interfering with everything till I cleaned tank. All previous owners must've thought this thing was a real lemon.

Not too expensive. A new fuel pump/fuel sending unit on my '00 S10-Blazer cost $280. I had the same problem. Gauge was reading inaccurate.

Not hard to replace, however there are several verison of the assemble. YOu have to drop the tank to get teh alpha numeric number of the tag on the assemble before oyu can buy the new one. Prices vary between stores, and so do warrenties. I was quoted any where from $260-$350. All depended on store, and warrenty. I called around and got price and availablitiy for all teh versions. Then when I had it out, I knew which store to go get the new one from.

Replace the fuel filter at the same time. I had to also replace my Ignition Control Modual, it died at eh same time. Hear that was a common thing, however I haven't been able to verify that yet.

On my tank there are 6 hoses, 1 bolt, and 1 nut to get the tank out.

The nut and bolt hold the straps in place. The other side of the strap hooks into the frame. SImple lift the strap up and slide it out to remove from frame. Gas weighs roughly 8 pounds pr gallon. Don't get stuck doing this with 15 gallons of gas in there.

Hoses- 3 are quick connect, not quick disconnect, they are attached to the fuel asemble. Should be able to pinch thm to remove. Yea right.
2 hoses go to the gas filler neck, spray them with WD-40 at teh connection to soften the rubber. Makes them much eaiser to remove. These 2 hoses are hose clamps, small socket of scredriver to unscrew.

Last hose is located up front, and is held in place with a spring clamp, use a pair of pliers to remove. Again WD-40.

If oyu don't ahv a bunch of gas in the tank, you can rmove the bolt and nut and ip the tank to remove the hoses. The straps will hold it up while oyu work on it. Carefull there will be a bunch of road debris on top of tank, and it will end up in your face when you tip it.

Clean the top of the tank extremely well before oyu take the fuel assemble out. You don't want any of that dirt int he tank.

Start to finish it took me about 2 1/2"hrs and that included about 30minutes to run and get the part. But that wasn't my first gas tank either. Plan on half a day with help and you should be fine.

For the $280, it'll be an entire new fuel pump / sending unit assembly. Fuel filter shouldn't be more than $10. And I don't know if I would just go replacing the ignition control module at this time. If it isn't bad, why replace it... When it goes bad, you'll know.

I'd like to add that in my experience with other vehicles, the sending unit failing has been a precursor to the fuel pump failing. My interpretation of this is that the fuel pump is heating up due to bearings or whatever going bad internally and this heat is causing the sending unit to flake out. This happened to my old '94 Intrepid. Fuel gauge wouldn't work below 1/2 tank and about a month after that started happening, the pump quit. Thankfully I was able to remove the access cover in the trunk and tap on the top of the fuel pump assembly to get home! Good for me. The sending unit on that fuel pump was mounted directly to the side of the motor casing where it could heat up the most.
