how do you...
There's plenty of posts you could read through describing the EGR valve and how to clean it, but alas...
EGR valve == Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve
Your's is located on the front of the engine, center of fan, pointing at you. It is about the size of a soda can and has an electrical connection on the top.
If you clean it, you'll need a new gasket for it.
To clean it, use some sensor safe carbon cleaner and an old tooth brush to clean out the passages. Simple as that.

If you are having trouble with your idle (fluctuations) or have some missing/stumbling symptoms then yes. If it's running normally, it couldn't hurt, but probably won't give you anything but peace-of-mind.
