A dead battery can cause a clicking sound. Batteries can die at any time as they get older than two years, depending on what you paid for it. As the lead plates inside the battery degrade, they eventually fold over and short against each other, or so I've been told. You don't notice it while moving, because the alternator keeps the engine going, but as soon as you shut down, there is no juice to start the car with. It is just one possibility, from someone who has had to replace three batteries over the last 3 years, in two cars.

I had this problem last week. I took my battery to autozone to have my battery tested. They did the test in 40 seconds and said the battery is good. I go back home and put the battery back in and fire up the blazer and it starts right up. I drive aroung the neighborhood alittle come back home turn off the blazer try to start it back up and nothing, no lights (on the dash) not even the engine trying to turn over. So I turned the key half way and nothing comes up but I waited a few seconds then all the dash lights came up then I turn my key even more to start the blazer and it starts right up. My wife took the blazer to the shop the next day and they tested the battery with the engine running and said the battery was bad. But autozone said it was good but the guy at the shop said they didnt test with a load. Since the put a new battery in there it been fine ever since. Hope this helps!

Later,
Mike D.
