Default rear end loose

hey gang. i noticed the other day that i can pull my back axle of my 84 full size k15 in and out about a quarter inch. not side to side or up and down strait in and out, what the heck. any idea,s. thanks.

Im not sure if you have c-clips or not, I think you do and I think that might be your problem, same crap in my camino, popped the cover and c clip was split.

Good suggestion by DetroitMuscle. Pull the cover off and check inside for wear or a broken "C" clip.
Do you have any bearing noise from the diff?
Either there is a problem with the "C" clip, or the groove in the axle is worn and wider than normal, or the pinion shaft is worn.
There is always some end play in the axle, but 1/4" sounds excessive....that's 1/4" on the end of the axle with the wheel off, right?

I'm too tired to go out and check mine right now, but I can do it on the weekend if you can wait.....pm me if you want me to check mine on the weekend'cause I'm old and forgetfull
