Default Blower motor cover

I'm getting ready to replace my blower motor and was under the hood checking things out. When I touched the blower motor cover it crumbled, pieces just broke off with the slightest touch. Is the cover necessary? I figure it's a dealer only part and they'll want a fortune for it.

my 96 did the same thing about 7 months ago. Figured it probably kept some of the heat away or something. All is still fine, everything works on the climate control...a/c still blows ~34*F on max, so i guess it didn't hurt anything.

Nah..these covers are only there to help insulate the evaporator case to aid in the efficiency of the a/c system..they are only used on the utility vehicles..not on s10's IIRC...due to the fact that there's alot more area to cool in the utilities. I wouldn't just tear the rest of it off for that reason, but it will be fine without it...may take a little longer to cool the cabin when it's really hot outside though.

Ditto here too. Been crumbling away little by little on my 95 but the A/C and heat seem fine.
