Default 1996 rear hatch always opens (?)

Hey guys,

I am new to the forum. Just traded my 1997 S10 in for a 1996 Blazer. Lovin it so far.

There is a problem that just sprang up yesterday. I put the blazer in reverse to back out of my drive, then when I shift into drive, the rear hatch pops open. I have been able to diagnose this a bit...

What's actually going on is there is constant voltage being sent to the rear hatch at all times. What doesn't allow it to open, is the gear shifter being in anything except for Park or Neutral.

Trying to diagnose the voltages at the wires....the rear hatch switch (push button on the dash) has 4 wires, two for the release and two for a light in the switch. The two wires that go to the release are black/white and orange. Both wires have 12v. My brief knowledge of electrical wiring tells me that this is a problem? Maybe not.

Testing the wires at the release mechanism in the tailgate, there are two. One orange/black, the other black/white. The black/white constantly has 12v, the orange/black received about 6v when shifted into Reverse, Overdrive, Drive, 2, or 1. However, when in Park or Neutral, there is no juice.

My issue, as I would think, is that both wires at the switch have power. Is this a ground issue? Or is there a relay somewhere that I should know about?

Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thanks guys and gals,
LtArcticWolf

Solution: I finally figured out what was wrong my rear hatch. The button on the tailgate on the outside of the vehicle was stuck shut. Since I just got the vehicle, I didn't realize that it was weathered to the point where it was making contact to open the hatch and sticking.

Thanks for all who helped and those who spent time looking into the issue.
