Default 97 model starter soleniod drawing to much current

The fusible link burned out feeding the starter soleniod. I took and ran a wire straight to the soleniod and touched it yo the battery and yhe wire started to get warm and the then smoke. I pulled the starter and took it to parts store and it checked out good. Put it back on thrn tryed it again and it started. Now thos morning back to the same thing with wire getting hot to soleniod. I'm thinking maybe a bad connection at soleniod maybe, or is it possible bad soleniod. Thanks
