Default Fuel gauge always reads E

Hello I have a 97 Chevy 2dr 4wd blazer, the fuel gauge always reads E when you turn the key off it floats back up to between E and half a tank but as soon as you Turn the key on it drops back to E. Anyone have any idea what to do? Thanks

Bad connection or the float may be messed up in the tank. I would look at the connections on top of the tank and look for the ground first. Ground may be dirty. Do this first before pulling the tank.

Default Fuel gauge

Usually when the fuel gauge goes wonky, it is a problem with the fuel pump harness. It has to bereplaced. Very common GM issue. Sometimes coincides with an impending fuel pump failure. The contacts in connector housing get hot, form corrosion and things just go south from there

True, but I dont want him to buy a pump if its not needed. Dont just throw money at it till its fixed

The replacement harness would be pretty cheap to try. I've had 3 Malibu's, 1 Grand Am, 1 Cavalier and 2 GM pickups thst followed the same path over sevseral years. A few weeks if not days after the gauge went wonky, the fuel pump died. My advice, try the harness first. Gonna have to drop the tank eithrr way.
