Default HID Lights and Stock Headlight Housing

Can you use the stock headlight housing with HID lights? I've heard that you can and have also heard that you can't. I wasn't sure if I'd have to purchase projector headlights or not. I've looked through several pages of threads on here but didn't find my answer. Can anyone help me out on this? I've got Sylvania Silverstar headlight bulbs right now and they just aren't all that bright. Was wanting to upgrade to HID if I can without having to buy the projector housing.
