Fused orange with always on 12V is socket power on pin 16 for socket power
The other orange is communication with the transfer case module on pin 13 (4wd models only)
Tan is communication with the airbag module on pin 9
Blk/wht and blk are grounds on 5 and 4 respectively
ppl is class 2 comm data on pin 2

ZR2 motors are exactly the same as non-ZR2 motors. If they were not then I have been missing 27 hp since buying mine new way back in 2000! Did you replace with the same year motor?

And go slap that knuckle head that told you ZR2 motors have more power.

Yes this also baffled me so I did some research and I agree with AJ, looks like there was only one engine, the 190hp 4.3L Vortec.

The "telephone game" aside, the important part of this is that I don't think that the wiring is any different except as it relates to vanity options and certainly not as it relates to engine functions. Additionally, the VCM/ODB adaptor is not involved in the starting function regardless so we need to finish chasing that down as a totally standalone problem.
