Troubleshooting a starter?
Hi Guys;
New member here needing some advice on troubleshooting a starter for a full sized 1985 GMC Jimmy with a 305 engine. My Jimmy has been garaged for about a decade with only an occasional cranking and drive around the block to try and keep things semi-functional. This past weekend I charged the battery, which is perpetually dead, but the truck refused to start. My voltmeter shows 12V, the headlights and radio work, but when I turn the key I only get a clicking sound (sort of like a dead battery). I didn't have time to dig any further, but figure that I should start by looking for corroded connections around the starter and solenoid. I'm afraid that when it comes to electrical issues I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Can anyone offer up some basic troubleshooting advice?
Thanks and Kindest Regards,
Tom
