Well, we have certainly gotten way off track from the OP's initial post. Perhaps we should stop here and get back to his question if anything else needs to be said concerning it.

I know this is an old post but I was looking to 'darken' my tail lights and used the search and found this. I looked up some laws and it seems the brake lights must be between 80 and 300 candles and there must be minimum intensity ratios between the bright (brake) and dim (tail) modes, what ever that means. I spoke to a cop about this, he looked at me and said "I don't know, make the mod and see if you get a ticket". After a few more reads and questions it seems that A, As long as your brake lights meet the 80-300 candles brightness and you tail (dim) lights are about 50% of the brake light brightness (brake light 200 candles, tail lights 100 candle) you should be legal. The turn signal should be of a brightness so not to dazzel people. Retroreflectors have to be rear facing and red (not part of the light cluster). Reversing lamps have to be white and working if they are fitted.

So after all this reading, asking questions and looking on the net for covers, paint, complete clusters I have made my mind up. I like my lights just the way they are because I have no clue if the lights will be legal if I touch them with anything other then water!
