Default Have a look at what I found - a new project

Found this gem on the back end of the property I live on buried amoungst some bushes. My landlord has owned this property for over 50 years and forgot about this for years and years and years. we chopped down some trees that were at least 10 years old to get it out with a chain and the tractor. The tires even had air in them still, 10psi in each. The brake pedal is on the floor, something must be broken in the mechanical brake linkages to check out too.

After a little research, we found that its a 49 DeSoto Custom, it has everything original in it, and the original motor. I was unable to get it to start due to the old gas, and did a compression test on all 6 cylinders and its making 95-110 pounds!!! What a score! The engine is a flathead valve in block style, liquid cooled, about 280 CID and makes about 115 hp when new. I have ordered a fuel pump and new ignition parts and a carb kit for it and should have my parts to get it going this week I hope.

This is now my new project and the blazer will just be getting kept running and not having any money sank into it. Have a peek and let me know what you think.

I plan on taking it all apart and doing a complete resto custom job on it. Im thinking 80s S10 frame and suspention with a 383 and 700R4 to start (I own one of these already for a donor too!)... chop the top, powder coat all that chrome flat black, flat black paint with an old skool flamejob... Buckets in the front, add dual sunroofs. HID lights, LED lights and new wiring for the rest of the car, and add anymore little new tech things I can think of. My wife wants to keep it original but I say to hell with that.

Wow that is some luck! How on earth is it that clean (Even the interior) after sitting for that long!?!

I'm envious. What a find! Man, I would seriously think about leaving it original though. It would probably be worth more.

well its so clean I guess cause it rains alot here in BC. The car has alot of that green hairy stuff that grows on the north side of stuff on the drivers side. all the windows were closed so the interior is nice. it was in some bushes so the sun wasnt shining on it much. it appears that the paint is not original, the landlord said hes owned it from his dad who owned it originally, and his father had it painted again about 15 years ago, that was the same color as the original paint was. so if I can convince him to give it to me I would be the second driver and third owner. I might have to give him a couple thousand bucks for it or so, but Ill try and get him to make me work the berryfarm to pay it off that would make me happy.

i dont want to keep it original, maybe this year and we can drive it around on sundays, but I would like to update the running technology and use it as a daily driver. IFS and fuel injection would be slick mods and speed it up quite a bit. I also would like some 17 or 18 inch rims and tires instead of these bias ply whitewalls that are probably not safe to drive on anymore.

I am all for modding, but if you redid that thing to spec.... idk how much the cost difference would be, but that would be ONE HELLA CAR, I know people do restorations, but man... think of the $$$$$$$

If you ever decide to sell it at auction it's worth a ton more restored to original specs. It's not like the Blazers that they made by the thousands. Thats an unmolested original car. I'd restore it and keep it just the way it is.

Agreed... updating a few things here and there is one thing but I wouldn't molest something that's rare.
