Knock Sensors rusted out

Knock Sensors rusted out
I have an 02 Z71 Tahoe. I just replaced both knock sensors located under the intake manifold. The rear one looked rusted out, the front one looked new. I do get on muddy roads, fields and pastures on my farm. I try to keep the engine washed off with super clean and water. I evidentley was wrong in thinking that the water would evaporate with the heat of the engine because the sensor rusted out. Is there some way to keep this from happening again and still keep the engine and underhood clean? Has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks,
DAVE

Not sure why this is in "Headers, Intake, & Exhaust"... Moving to "The Lounge" since this really isn't a vehicle related to this site.
There is a technical service bulletin on these engines that instructs to use silicone to seal up around the rubber boot on the top of the knock sensor.
