Default Rebuilt trans. shifting hard

Just had a rebuilt trans. installed in my 2001 Lumina 3.1 ltr. $1300 bucks worth including a new torque converter. I think it was a pretty good deal. It seems to shift kinda hard all through the gears....with a slight jerk. Is this normal after a rebuild? Will it get better with time or do I need to address this ASAP with the shop. Or can I check something first. Did check the fluid, a-ok. Just want to get some info before I give them a call.

Shop should garauntee it's work, go back and ask politely why it seems to be shifting hard since your rebuild.

It depends on what type of parts they put in the tranny. Actually if the gears slam together a little they will surprisingly last longer, however the drive train parts don't enjoy it as much so they wear out faster. But I would go back to the shop and inquire why it is acting that way, just to be on the safe side.

Is this a 3 speed trans or a 4 speed. Crusing on the freeway @ 65 mph the rpm's are at about 3000. Does that sound right? Is something missing when they did the rebuild?

4 speed automatic. RPMs depend on gearing and tires. At 60MPH with 3.73 gears in my old Bravada, I would be around 2000RPM. With the torque converter unlocked, this would rise about 300-400RPM.

3rd gear is direct 1 to 1 gear ratio through the transmission. It sounds like you don't have 4th.

Here is one other thing too. While crusing on the freeway in overdrive, if I would shift into drive there is no RPM change either.

What would be the cause of 4th gear missing? Adjustment? Just want to get a little educated on this before I give them a call, thanks.

Looks like it ended up being a bad pump in the trans.
