Default So I was looking for jerry cans ...

Talking I my brother in law about making a bumper/tire carrier/Jerry can carrier... And he mentions he came across some an I could have them.. One water one fuel just like I wanted..

Water is stamped 1943 and the fuel is stamped 1980 USMC( awesome)

Anyone know about that rust remover stuff you can put inside them and seal them up so it'll be safe for water/gas?
What about a gasket for the caps? An lastly the original paint ?

I hate to say it but you are probably better off getting new ones for the gas and water and just keep the old ones as collectables. Not knowing the full history of the cans who knows what was put in them. Good luck with the build.

Well I was told there some stuff summit sells that eats rust and a second bottle that once done with first substance second substance coats the inside.
I'm sure I could probably make a gasket for the handles.
I'm really not wanting to let go of these because I like military gear.. And since I was in the USMC this is even better. But If I still need a better one Ill probably get another...

I've got two jerry cans and just recently painted one of them. Even rigged it up so I can mount one on my tire gate, though it blocks the tail light so I only use it for off road.

Unless the inside is rusted badly I wouldn't worry to much about it. Throw a handful of small nuts, bolts, screws, etc and shake the can for a while. That'll know the rust out of there. Just make sure they are small enough so you don't dent the can.

The gasket you can make yourself from a sheet of 1/16th inch rubber. Scissors, razor, hole punch, your choice of implement.

As for what was in them before? Really doesn't matter. If there is no odors and free of rust, flush the can out with a little bit of gas and call it good. If there is an odor of something, some Dawn or other degreaser and water should take care of it. Rinse completely, let dry and flush with gas.

Gas cans should never be carried inside the passenger compartment. The build up of fumes can end up being deadly rather than just giving you a head ache.

This involves moving the spare to the left with a plate. Not hard to do at all. The reason I didn't go this route, or rather the two reasons, is:

1. I'll only be carrying the jerry can offroad

2. Moving the tire further out on the swing gate plus adding a jerry can full of fuel just might over stress the swing gate assembly at some point.

My sheet metal is still in pretty good shape after 11 years and what I've put her through. I don't want to overload the swing gate and have a failure of the hinges or mounting points.
