My 01 has been a thorn sense day one but now I’m having that backfire missing problem spent almost 800 at mechanic shop and still has problems that can’t find it and don’t want to keep giving my money to a shop. That doesn’t know what there doing help before I junk it

I'll start the ball rolling but I hope someone else will chime in too with some help.

First, what did the repair shop do? Did you get a list of OBD codes? Did the symptoms come on all at once or gradually?

What Christine asked plus, do you have a scanner with live data capability? If not we need to get you hooked up before we get started.

It was only the vacuum lines being disconnected?? Yeah, that is a bad shop!

A few weeks ago a friend asked me to follow her across town to deliver her 4Runner to the shop that had recently worked on it to figure out why it seemed to run rough.

Turned out they either never reconnected the lower radiator hose or forgot to tighten the clamp so that all the coolant drained out.

Fortunately, she only drove it a total of a few miles and would shut it off at the first sign of trouble. Otherwise the engine could have been ruined.
